Both teams lost their opening matches and will rekindle their hopes of getting back to winning ways and reaching the round of 16 of the 33rd edition of the competition in Cameroon.

The Warriors were heartbroken after Liverpool winger Sadio Mann converted a penalty late in the 1-0 win over Senegal, despite losing 1-0 to Guinea for a first-half goal by Isiaga Seela.

The Flames, who first qualified for the Afcon in 1984, have failed to qualify for the group stage on three occasions in the tournament's history, and Zimbabwe has failed to reach the same stage in each of their four appearances.

On the other hand, since beating Ghana 2-1 in the 2006 edition in Egypt, Zimbabwe has not won a single game in the tournament for almost 16 years.

Flems had just 15 players available for their opener against Guinea on Monday after nine players and head coach Mario Marinica tested positive for Covid-19.

The players who missed the opener were Orlando Pirates striker Gabadinho Mango, Richard Embulu, defender Mark Fodia, Peter Cholopy, Lawrence Chazia, Stanley Sanudi, midfielder Chicotti Chirawa, Charles Petro and Robin Engal.

However, the team received an incentive as Petro and Fodia came back to test negative and are available for the game to watch. They have strengthened their squad with five new call-ups: Brighton Munthali, Paul Endlovu, Dan Chimbalanga, Gerald Firi and Stein Dave.

Malawi assistant coach Mack Mwas acknowledged that Zimbabwe were a very good team strategically but said he was ready to take care of them.

"We had a very good but unfortunate performance against Guinea, we admitted our mistakes and the match in Zimbabwe will be completely different," said Mwas, the team's manager in Marinica's absence, according to CafeOnline.

"Some of our players are behind after missing the first game. Zimbabwe are a very good team strategically, but I have told my players that we are in a can't-miss situation."

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe is sweating the availability of Knowledge Masona and Kundai Benu. Although Benueu was injured against Senegal, Mussona is suffering from the flu.

Zimbabwe coach Norman Mapeza has said a decision on the involvement of the two players will be taken during final preparations.

"We have two injured boys. Kundair suffered an ankle injury against Senegal and the captain [Missona] was battling flu-like symptoms," Mussona said on the Zimbabwe FA social media page.

"We will test everything in our final preparations tonight."

However, Zimbabwe got a boost on Friday when defender Jordan Jemura, who missed the opening against the Teranga Lions, finally reached the EFL championship squad's field in Bournemouth and "trained with the team".

Mapeza, however, kept a bold face before the match, noting that his players had forgotten about the 1-0 defeat to Senegal and focused on winning.

"After the last minute defeat against Senegal, we are working to recover, we have a great team and we know we have to win the game against Malawi," Mapeza told CafeOnline.

"I have talked to very emotional players and I am happy that they have decided to forget the match against Senegal. I have no intention of making any changes to my team, but I will focus only on consistency and consistency. Effective use of our opportunities.

Game preview

Malawi's two previous AFCON appearances were in 1984 and 2010, where each time they were last in their group, winning only one of six games (D1 L4).

Flame have only scored four goals in six games in the AFCON 2021 qualifying campaign, the lowest of the 24 teams in this year's tournament, alongside Comoros.

Zimbabwe, meanwhile, are last in their group in each of the previous four games and have never had a clean sheet in 12 games.

Malawi have failed to beat Zimbabwe in their last six games, the Warriors have won three and drawn the remaining three. The last time they met was in the 2021 Cosafa Cup group stage, when the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
