New FIA President believes Hamilton's permanence in F1: “Important for sport” |
Although he has a two-year contract with Mercedes, Toto Wolff, head of the German team, recently put Lewis Hamilton's continuity after the controversial title loss to Max Verstappen in 2021 as uncertain. FIA (International Automobile Federation), Mohammed Ben Sulayem, says he is sure the seven-time champion will remain in the sport.
“Has he already declared he's not coming back? No. When you're a pilot, you speak for yourself and not for what others say about you,” he said, in an interview with Spanish newspaper Marca. “I hope that's not the case. Lewis is an important part of the sport and F1 with all its achievements. And with Verstappen there, I'm sure we'll find a very exciting F1 next season,” he added.

In addition to taking time off social media, Hamilton also failed to attend the FIA awards party. His absence, however, is an infringement of the sports code, which requires the top-3 of the championship to be present at the celebration. Even so, Jean Todt, now former president of the organization, had refused to apply punishments.
However, with Ben Sulayem's inauguration, he reiterates that the treatment of drivers and teams must be equal, and the integrity of the FIA must be respected. The agent admits, however, that he exchanged messages with the owner of car #44 and understands that he is still "not 100%".
“I texted him. I think he is not 100% ready yet and I understand his position. But some rules must be respected by all drivers. For me, there is no particular team or driver out of respect for the integrity of the FIA,” he explained.
“But I can't judge until I have all the data, and the first thing on my agenda is to take a deep look at what happened in Abu Dhabi. In the end, we're all human and the stress and pressure are there, so I think everything will work out. You have to look more to the future than to the past”, she concluded.
It is worth remembering that the World Council of the FIA (International Automobile Federation) revealed through a statement that it will carry out a “detailed analysis and clarification exercise” after the Formula 1 final in Abu Dhabi. Bin Sulayem has already stated that he hopes the investigation can serve so that, in the future, they have a "better plan of action in similar situations".
