Zurich:European champions Italy and Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal drew in the same round as the World Cup qualifiers play-offs on Friday, meaning at least one of them will miss next year's tournament in Qatar.

Italy will face Northern Macedia at home in the play-off semifinals next March, and the winner will advance to the World Cup with either Portugal or Turkey.

Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup - lost to Sweden in the play-offs - and now will probably have to beat Ronaldo and Portugal to avoid losing the tournament for the second time in a row. Portugal has always qualified for Ronaldo's career. He made his debut at the 2006 World Cup.

Also in the 12-team draw, Scotland will face Ukraine at home and the winner will play against Wales or Austria in the group final.

Russia hosts Poland for right to face Sweden or Czech Republic in Group F The final will be hosted by Russia or Poland.

March 24 will be played as six play-off semifinal singles elimination matches. Three finals will be played in five days.

The three winners will complete the entry of 13 countries into Europe in the formation of 32 teams in Qatar.

The draw for the FIFA tournament will be held on April 1 in Doha.

The play-offs include 10 teams that finished second in their qualifying round, and two teams - Austria and the Czech Republic - that won the Nations League group last year.
